Will we keep big guns?

After Berby's superb peforance on Sunday in linking up with Keano then subsequently on his own he has drawn some impressive plaudits. MJ said it may be the best peformance he has ever seen by a striker up front on his own. Steve Perryman said he is a Bill Nicholson player. Ronny Rosenthal even compared him to Marco Van Basten, high praise indeed for the elegant Bulgarian.

The upshot of this is that we have a hot property on our hands, the papers and websites that circulate the transfer gossip are awash with stories that we will be fighting off large bids for Berby in the summer. I realise that this is probably inevitable, United need a striker and should have gone for him when they had the chance, and lets be fair, he could get in the team anywhere in England. My favourtie rumour is that the filthy Gooners will be in for him. I don't care if they offer £50m for him, the chances of the club selling our best player to the enemy is laughable, they know the backlash from the fans would be unbearable.

Encouragingly Berbatov himself seems very settled and has made positive noises saying, "My first game was an experience I'll never forget. It was not good and we lost, but it was a long time ago and things are different now, I've learnt a lot. Against Bolton this time, not only me, but everyone, showed that we are a great club with a great future and, if we carry on like that, we can achieve a lot" even going on to suggest we had the squad to become a top 4 team.

With Berbatov, Lennon and King all signed on here until 2010 or beyond I would imagine it would take a ridiculous bid to displace one of them, especially given the effect Michael Carrick's move had on our midfield in the summer
